Seventh-grade social studies teacher
What’s the most innovative idea that you’ve tried in your classroom?
My Professional Learning Community and I developed a Cold War museum gallery walk. It utilizes primary sources, and the students roleplay as gallery curators to teach each other the outcomes of the Cold War.
Who is the best teacher you ever had and what made him or her special?
Mr. Bill Dillon, eighth-grade Georgia Studies at Dean Rusk Middle School. Not only was he a thoughtful and patient teacher (loved the Buddha points), but I was in his class when the planes hit the Twin Towers on 9/11 and I will never forget his class.
What can parents do to prepare their children for learning?
Read with them. Read with them all the time.
What are the obstacles to getting all kids to achieve?
Children can overcome obstacles by building resilience through trying hard things they may not be good at in a safe environment. The partnership between parents and teachers is the best way to help students achieve great things and become functioning members of society.
